报告摘要:

Graphene has taught us ample novel knowledge in two-dimensional materials and brought new potential applications for the next-generation electronic devices. The discovery and study of valleys in two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides with inversion symmetry broken have received tremendous attention in the past decade. In addition to the charge and spin of an electron, which are conventional degrees of freedom for information storage and manipulation techniques, valley of a two-dimensional honeycomb lattice can be viewed as another degree of freedom. First-principles theoretical predictions have made a lot of contributions to guide new materials synthesis in experiments. In this talk, I will briefly discuss a few examples to design new substrate stabilized valleytronic two-dimensional materials. I will discuss an epitaxial growth of group-IIIA homoatomic monolayer where inversion symmetry is broken arising from its substrate. A 100% valley selective circularly polarized light absorption and anomalous Nernst effect can be detected. Next, I will discuss the valley splitting when time reversal symmetry also breaks. This could lead to a fascinating quantum phenomenon – valley polarized quantum anomalous Hall effect – which combines valleytronics and topological materials together. Besides, the simultaneous breaking of inversion symmetry and time reversal symmetry also yields a valley polarized opto-electronic effect in group-V transition metal dichalcogenides.

Dr. Jian Zhou received his B.Sc. in Theoretical Mechanics in 2008 from Peking University. After he graduated from Peking University with a Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering in 2013, he was appointed as a post-doctoral researcher at Virginia Commonwealth University and then at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Dr. Zhou’s recent research mainly focuses on first-principles design of novel low-dimensional materials with their applications, including topological materials, valleytronics, energy materials, and phase change materials. He has published more than 60 papers in peer reviewed journals, including PNAS, JACS, PRL, Nano Lett., and Angew. Chem. These papers have received over 1800 citations. He was selected in the 1000 Talents Program for Young Scholars in 2017.
