The success of gravitational wave astronomy depends critically on advances in data analysis techniques. We review some of the outstanding challenges in GW data analysis across different frequency bands and detectors and discuss some recent successes that have been achieved in overcoming these challenges using Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO). The talk will inform the broader audience of PSO’s usefulness as a powerful general-purpose optimization method for solving non-linear parametric/non-parametric statistical regression problems that are now increasingly encountered in physics and astronomy. Some of its distinct advantages over Markov Chain Monte Carlo methods, which have long been the only option when confronting high-dimensional continuous optimization problems, will be outlined. |

Soumya Mohanty现为University of Texas Rio Grande Valley物理系与引力波天文学中心（CGWA）教授；2009 – 2015和2003 – 2009年间他分别任University of Texas at Brownsville物理与天文学系的副教授和助理教授。1997 – 2003年间，他先后在德国马普爱因斯坦研究所、美国加州理工学院和宾夕法尼亚州立大学做博士后研究。他于1997年获得Inter University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics（Pune, India）的物理学博士学位。1999-2015年Mohanty教授是LIGO科学合作组织成员，任burst探测组的internal reviewer，是第一次和后续多次探测到引力波事件所用的数据处理算法的共同作者。他是第10届引力波数据处理工作组等国际会议或委员会的主席或成员。此外，他还是CQG，IJMPD，A&A，IEEE transactions等杂志的审稿人。Mohanty教授的主要研究领域是引力波数据处理的理论与算法以及与引力波相关的天体物理，他在该领域多年来积累了非常丰富的经验。 |
