In the first part of this talk I will give a general presentation of the fundamental principles and scientific milestones behind the unprecedented accuracy of today’s optical clocks, reaching fractional frequency uncertainties of 10-18 in some laboratories. The primary focus will be on single ion optical clocks. In the second part, the optical clock developed at NRC, based on the electric quadrupole transition of a trapped and laser-cooled single ion of 88Sr+ will be presented in more detail. Many important topics will be covered, from the basic operation of our standard, including interrogation of the clock transition, state preparation, and stability, to a detailed discussion of several key systematic shifts that must be well-understood and controlled to achieve high accuracy. At present, the 88Sr+ ion clock at NRC has an evaluated uncertainty of 1×10-17. Avenues for reducing the uncertainty below the 5× 10-18 level will be discussed.

rof. Pierre Dubé is Research is senior research officer in the Frequency and Time Group at the National Research Council of Canada. He develop a state-of-the-art optical clock based on a trapped and laser-cooled single ion of 88Sr+, with fractional uncertainty at the 1×10-17 level, developed an ultra-stable laser system for probing the Hz-level linewidth of the clock transition of 88Sr+. His interest among many, are Ultra-high resolution spectroscopy, Atomic state control for highly-stable clock operation, spectroscopy of molecular iodine, off-line lab for trapping 41K, Overtone saturation spectroscopy of acetylene, and so on.
