报告摘要:

After decades of effort, Gravitational Wave (GW) astronomy became a reality with the detection of a binary black hole (BBH) merger in 2015 by LIGO. This remarkable discovery has been followed by the detection of three additional BBH mergers and a binary neutron star inspiral, the latter confirming the association of some short gamma-ray bursts with double neutron star progenitors. Given that LIGO and Virgo have already made detections, even though they have yet to reach their second generation design sensitivities, and given that two additional comparable sensitivity detectors are in the pipeline, the future of ground-based GW astronomy looks very bright. In parallel to the ground-based effort, progress continues to be made in opening up the GW window at lower frequencies using space-based detectors and Pulsar Timing Arrays. In this talk, we will review a critical component of the technology involved in realizing GW astronomy, namely, data analysis. Several different areas of GW data analysis across different frequency regimes will be covered and open challenges (in the speaker’s opinion) will be highlighted.
报告人简介:

Soumya D. Mohanty现为University of Texas Rio Grande Valley物理系与引力波天文学中心(CGWA)教授;2009–2015和2003–2009年间他分别任University of Texas at Brownsville分校物理与天文学系的副教授和助理教授。1997–2003年间,他先后在德国马普爱因斯坦研究所、美国加州理工学院和宾夕法尼亚州立大学做博士后研究。他于1997年获得Inter  University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics(Pune, India)的物理学博士学位。1999-2015年Mohanty教授是LIGO科学合作组织成员,任burst探测组的internal reviewer,是第一次和后续多次探测到引力波事件所用的数据处理算法的共同作者。他是第10届引力波数据处理工作组等国际会议或委员会的主席或成员。此外,他还是CQG,IJMPD,A&A,IEEE transactions等杂志的审稿人。Mohanty教授的主要研究领域是引力波数据处理的理论与算法以及与引力波相关的天体物理,他在该领域多年来积累了非常丰富的经验。
